The soil
The land situated at the foot of the Albera Mountains is of slate on the highest hillside and of a sand and clay texture with different contents of clay as we approach the alluvial plain, varying from one piece of land to the other.
In general the land is generally acidic, poor in organic materials and with good drainage.
The fermentation is done by separating the land into individual parcels and varieties. The diversity of the soil allows them to obtain wines with different textures and aromas.
The weather
The climate is Mediterranean with plenty of sunny days and extreme temperatures moderated by the proximity to the sea. The rainfall is also moderate approximately 600 mm annually.
The most distinguishing feature of the climate is the Tramontana, a strong wind, and its great influence on wine growing. This strong northerly wind dries the air prevents the development of microorganisms, which are harmful to the grape. The Tramontana also helps the grapes to ripen.
The vineyards
Mas LLunes has 45 hectares of vines, planted with traditional red wine varieties: black Garnatxa, Samso (black Carinyena), as well as Merlot , Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Cabernet Franc. There are also white varieties planted such as white Garnatxa, white Carinyena, Macabeo and Roussane.
Of this area , 7 hectares of vines are very old, between 50 and 100 years. These vines grow as goblet trees and are planted at a distance of 1,80 x 1,80 m each.
The rest of the vineyards have been planted with vines from 1992 to 2005. These are trained vines and are planted at a distance of 2,5 to 1,2 metres.
